The island of Merksay is made of more than rocks and famous landmarks. It’s made up of people. It’s 457 residents all have their own histories, their own stories. And in this blog, I hope to share some of them with you.
A beloved favourite of many on the island, Baubie Ballantyne is Merksay’s oldest living resident. But her age has not been one to slow her down, as she remains as busy and as full of lust for life as any islander. For over 60 years now, Baubie has been running her famous bed and breakfast, one of the most popular destinations for visitors to the islands. It has been a long-held belief amongst the locals that no one cooks, has cooked or will ever cook a tautie scone like auld Baubie!
The unfortunate incident with the body aside, Baubie’s B&B has enjoyed a sterling reputation for quality service. Should you bring your family to Merksay, I can’t think of a place I’d more quickly recommend for you to stay on your visit.
